Travelogue #6 : Oh-so-Yummeh! Macarons @ Jean-Paul Hevin Chocolatier, Hong Kong

Ola fellow readers, am back in continuing my Hong Kong travelogue post! Apologies for the long hiatus.

Was doing shopping at Harbour City area with lots of high-end iconic fashion brands around! When we were tired of walking, spotted a boutique selling chocolates. We just look see as they are not cheap and guess what! Macarons *scream* ! Been hunting for some authentic macarons but they always disappoint me (for what I had tried in Malaysia).

Paused for awhile, wondering should we or should we not? Since we were here and these mini colorful creatures were so seducing that we decided to grab them home! I know it was a bit pricey, costing around HKD20 or higher for one piece but it's just once in a blue moon so forget about the price! Just do it!
A wide array of colorful macarons consisting of various flavors!
Macarons Coffret, an ideal gift idea.

5 Macarons Coffret (L-R) : Framboise-Raspberry, Passion Fruit, Caramel, Bergamote & Pistachio. A box of 5 pieces miniature delights cost at HKD100.
1. Macaron Framboise-Raspberry : Milk chocolate and pink biscuit filled with dark chocolate ganache and raspberry pulp.
2. Macaron Passion Fruit : Orange and dark chocolate biscuit. Dark and milk chocolate with passion fruit juice.
3. Macaron Caramel : Bright yellow chocolate biscuit filled with butterscotch and dark chocolate ganache.
4. Macaron Bergamote : Brown red and tea seeds biscuit filled with Earl Grey tea ganache.
5. Macaron Pistachio : Pistachio and dark chocolate biscuit. Dark chocolate ganache and pistachio marzipan.

Meringue shells were chewy while the interior ganache was great! Tastewise ,it was incredibly good and not not too sweet.

Jean-Paul Hevin produces fresh decent macarons besides chocolates.

Too colorful to be chomp!

Travelogue #5: Traditional Cantonese Brekkie @ 海皇粥店, 油麻地。Ocean Empire Food Shop @ YMT, Kowloon.

It's brekkie time in HK! *dragged myself out of bed* First thing in mind : What to eat for breakfast? *I have no idea*

So let's walk around and hunt for some awesome brekkie! Since am looking for some traditional cantonese breakfast, definitely not the yucky dim sum, I want to have congee! And we roamed around YMT..... Oh look! 海皇粥店-> means congee *my favie*

海皇粥店 / Ocean Empire Food Shop. Hmm, food shop? Sounds weird but never mind, as long as they feed me nice food!

Here we are fixing the Traditional Hong Kong Cantonese breakfast which consist of congee (粥), steamed rice rolls (肠粉), stir fried noodle (炒面), or deep fried dough sticks (油条). As for me, I am not keen in trying their stir fried noodle as HK's version is always tasteless.

What we ordered:

On our table : A selection of sauces, ground pepper and white sesame seed.

Tadaa! The must-have! Best combination with congee! We usually call it deep fried dough stick but here, they named it as Twisted Doughnut HKD8. I looked everywhere but I don't find it in twisted shape rather in a stick only. Why name it as twisted doughnut? *scratch head* The waitress chopped it to smaller sizes so here you are-> freshly served deep fried Twisted Doughnut! It's huge in size and definitely healthier than Malaysia's version. To my surprise, it is not that oily at all and tasted sweet and crunchy! *crunch crunch crunch* Frankly speaking, I love HK's deep fried dough stick than Malaysia's one. Usually, I have to use tissues to absorb the OIL before eating. Now I can have my HK deep fried dough stick/Twisted Doughnut with no worries!

Fish Slice Congee 鱼片粥 HKD18.50

The none other than must-try congee-> 皮蛋艇仔粥 Thousand-year egg & "Sam Pan" Congee HKD19.50.  I still prefer to call it Millennium eggs than thousand-year egg, so weird right? A bowl filled with treasures! The congee alone was so tasteful, added with other ingredients-> Thumbs Up! There's millennium eggs, minced beef balls, "choi pou" (salted vege) and squid. Sprinkled with ginger slices and green onion.

牛脷酥 Ox Tongue Crisp HKD8. Looks alike with other deep fried dough but this was awesome! We ordered 2 basket of this! The dough itself was crispy, soft & sweet. It tasted so good which makes me go speechless. It will be best to dip it in Kopi-O (The kopitiam style) / Cafe Americano. Again, it's not that oily that's why I had more of this.

香茜叉烧肠粉 BBQ Pork with Coriander Ricesheet Roll HKD16.50. Besides congee, we also tried the HK version of steamed rice sheet roll. Boy it was so good! The best thing was chunks of "char siu"/ BBQ Pork rolled inside the "cheong fun"/ steamed rice sheet roll unlike Malaysia's one with bits only! This plate of "cheing fun" best served with sweet soy sauce, sorry didn't capture that. Now I know why my friend always prefer HK style CCF because it is really good!

In HK, you must try their "si mut nai char" / HK Style Milk Tea 丝袜奶茶. I love my cup served hot. Well, it was served tasteless so you can tailor yourself the sweetness according to your liking, provided with sachets of coarse sugar.

Most of the people still like it with ice, it's summer yo! It tasted like Malaysia's Teh-Tarik. Actually it is more or less the same. Difference is Malaysia's version sweet max!

Look! Their pastries are all in huge sizes! Now you want to know how Ox Tongue Crisp look like? Move your eye ball to the left!

Steamed Rice Sheet Roll in process!

Travelogue #4: It's all about Food & Shopping at Tsim Tsa Tsui, Kowloon.

Free and easy session iz back! It's all about roaming around Tsim Tsa Tsui (TST), the heart and soul of HK,  in Southern Kowloon!

Walking down the street of TST, spotted this gigantic dog! His name is Obama.

Obama: "I'm done with pee, so I need some water!" *it's summer*

Look! Spotted Gong Cha kiosk! Haven't try the one in Malaysia but I'm gonna try this!

So I bought this Green Tea with Sour Plum. The best drink ever on a hot-like-hell summer!

HKD 12 only! Ranked 10/10!! I want more~

Shops along Nathan Road!

Walked a lot the whole day from street shops to shopping malls. Went to the biggest shopping mall-> Miramar Shopping Mall located at Nathan Road, TST! Most of the brands were originated from Japan, can't resist from touching and making them belong to me! We walked from TST back to YMT without us knowing that we actually walked this far instead of taking MTR!

What we had along our "walks":

A very small-almost-half-a-shop Won Ton Noodle Char Chan Ting! One of the ideal place to fix foodie obsession over Won Ton Noodle!

招牌三宝面 Signature Noodles (with prawn wonton, beef and fish paste) HKD34. A big bowl of WonTon noodles served in steaming hot broth with chunks of shrimp wontons/dumpling, beef and fish paste. All in generous amount! The soup itself was just good, not too oily unlike Malaysia's version of Wan Tan Mee in soup-> more like soup with ajinomoto. But I prefer Malaysia's version to be dry rather than soup.

The springy al dente egg noodles!

招牌云吞面 Won Ton Noodle HKD20. Here comes the ideal bowl of wonton noodle soup with big fat juicy shrimp wontons! Not the chopped-shrimps but the whole shrimp!

鲜鱼皮饺面 Fresh Fish Paste Dumpling Noodle HKD20. If you can't take shrimps, there's always an option of trying out their fish paste dumpling noodle!

Food: 7/10 (HK Won Ton Noodle is one of the perfect fodder)
Service: 4/10 (Waiter/waitress was not so friendly and got no patience)
Pricing: 7/10 (Quite affordable for such a great portion)
Ambiance: 5/10 (Never expect a clean place as it's only a normal Char Chan Ting)

Address:
耀记云吞面食
九龙佐敦庇利金街31号

Walked back to Temple Street, Yau Ma Tei (YMT). Temple Street has its own night market every night open from 4pm to midnight. What you can find at Temple Street night market? Foods, inexpensive item, etc.
Temple Street night market is famous for its roadside dining (大牌档/Dai Pai Dong), serving local street cuisine from seafood, steamed rice to dim sum.

Oh look! This is damn old school! Didn't know it is still existing today-> Soft serve ice cream truck!

Aww I feel like a kid again, how nice! A good idea to have this around during summer!

Was craving for Hong Kong curry fish balls and local street snacks, which I've missed so much from previous visits. To cure my obsession over fish balls.......

炸肠 Fried Intestine. One of the best street snacks, how can you resist this crispy yummylicious food?

Curry fish balls are one of the popular must-have street snacks! You can choose from non-spicy, medium spice to spicy. Well, even the non-spicy still spicy to me. But I love their chewy rubbery-like fish balls! I can have countless sticks on this single item yo!

Varieties of HK local street snacks!

碗仔翅 Shark Fin Soup. One of the local snacks but this was total disappointing!

Fried Intestine! Served with sweet sauce.Yummeh!

Non-spicy fish balls & beef balls (鱼蛋&牛肉丸). *drools*

Reached hotel with sore feet after walking for more than 12hours! No joke! Exhausted but glad that my big time rescuer was with me-> Hada Labo!
Bought few packs of Hada Labo Whitening Mask from Sasa and used it immediately to fix my dehydrated skin! To call it a day, put on Hada Labo Whitening cum Hydrating mask sheet and depart to slumberland!

Travelogue #3: Complimentary Half Day Tour to Hong Kong Island

My apologies for the long hiatus, let's continue with our third part of HK travelogue! Just a few hours of nap sleep, woke up and our tour guide is waiting for us already. 6am in the morning and the sun is waving! Down side of travelling in tour group -> Restless & not enough of sleep! Luckily it was only a complimentary half day tour!

Apparently, most of the tour groups will always bring their tourist to some famous tourist area and "lepak" around, take some pictures and meet up and continue....... The usual boring rushie thing, but NEVERMIND, as long as everyone enjoy it! So, where is our first destination? We went through the Victoria Harbour crossings (Cross-Harbour Tunnel) from Kowloon, entering into HK Island! Tour guide hinted us on flowers, Malaysia-> Hibiscus, HK-> forgot Bauhinia.

First MUST Stop :
Golden Bauhinia @ Golden Bauhinia Square, Wan Chai North, HK Island. So it's a huge golden flower sculpture located outside the HK Convention & Exhibition Centre. Since it's a SUMMER in HK,it is freaking HOT even it's only 9am in the morning! Burning me from head-to-toe! Not into taking photo mood but took it since we're there. Asked the tour guide why is it so HOT, only to find out HK's ozone's layer got "lubang", so it's over-polluted.

Look at my hair and you'll know. VERY windy and total burning sun too!

Sooooo sunnie aight?

After quick snap in front of the giant Bauhinia/ HK's symbol flower, we ran to some place with shades while waiting for others.
View over the harbour

It will be nicer if it's at night.

Really very sunny and hot!

The ladies in front of the waterfront walkway

Done with morning tanning, hopping up to the bus! Hungry till speechless so we went for brekkie! Our first breakfast in HK Island -> placing high hope to have some awesome-yummy-salivating DIM SUM!

Feeding Station :
Dim Sum at New Star Restaurant, Jaffe Road

New Star Seafood Restaurant

Dim Sum was prepared upon our arrival.

Char Siew Pau (叉烧包) / Cantonese Bun with Barbecued Pork filling. Missed Ipoh's dim sum when eating this. The bun itself was so thick and not much of filling.

Turnip Cake (萝卜糕). Cakes are made from mashed radish with bits of dried shrimps that are steamed and pan-fried later. This tasted much better but nothing to shout about.

Congee/ Duck Egg and Pork Porridge (皮蛋瘦肉粥). -> Tasteless. Their soy sauce/kicap is weird.

Spring Roll (春卷). A thin flour skin consisting various types of veges and deep fried. It is very crispy but TOO OILY!

Shrimp Dumpling (虾饺). Steamed dumpling with a whole shrimp as filling rather than chopped. Now, this is good!

Rice Noodle Rolls (肠粉). Steamed rice noodles rolled and filled with barbecued pork or shrimp, topped with sesame seeds and served with sweetened soy sauce. This was not bad but I still prefer Malaysia's version of HK CCF!

Siu Mai (烧卖). Steamed dumplings with fillings such as pork or shrimps, topped with crab roe. Tasted cold when we eat them.

Next visit : Repulse Bay 浅水湾 & Guan Yin Temple 观音庙

It's my second visit to this temple, it is just another temple where people believe with touching the god/godness, they will get rich with strikes of lottery, etc etc etc.
Believe it or not, the tree behind us looks as if it's made of paper because I can tear it out layer by layer!

Bungalows of the rich men! Andy Lau, Jackie Chan and other HK celebrities are staying there! Spotted the temple-like green roof top? It's Jackie Chan's car park with numbers of Mitsubishi(s)!

Just take a moment and gaze at the ocean, watch and listen to the waves gently kissing hitting the shore. It is a mesmerizing and stress relieving experience. With clear blue water along the long stretch of beach, sound of waves lapping the seashore, breezy air and soft golden sand...oh-so-relax!

The only "ang mo" sun bathing under the freaking hot burning sun! Oh did I mention this is a man-made beach? *wink wink* Oh wait, there's shark around! That's why there's shark prevention net and lifeguards on duty.

Nice beach! Of cause la...it's man-made wad! LOL

10AM's scenery. It's clean but air was polluted so don't in-hale too hard!

Oh-so-smelly-> The sea water.

Candid chot by bro! Nice one.

The meh-meh -> Goat

They force me touch it. So-called stone that once touched it, you'll get a BF! O.o

Group pic with the loved ones!

Done with Repulse Bay and Guan Yin Temple, I got rewarded with tanned skin! Our tour guide told me I got darker in 30mins! >.< Grumpy!

Notti GR barked at me :(

Next stop: Aberdeen 香港仔水上人家

The last tourist spot of the day was Aberdeen. Visited the floating village located at Aberdeen Harbour, get to know there are still fishermen staying on their boat with fish catching. Even though Aberdeen has transformed to a semi-commercial district, the lifestyle of fishing village still well maintained. Well, Stanley Ho bought and own this harbour.

Hopped on "Sighseeing Sampans". Just pay HK$50 per person for a 20-30minutes ride. The fishermen aka tour guides will bring you around for sightseeing but actually you see nothing interesting besides knowing they still maintain the culture of living on the boat.

All you can see are boats and high rise building or construction site.

Behind us was the Jumbo Floating Restaurant. According to the tour guide, besides the environment and atmosphere inside the restaurant, food wasn't that nice so not worth paying for the meal on boat.

Boat People gain extra income by driving tourist around for sightseeing.

Some famous star's boat. There are Leon Lai, Andy Lau, Jacky Chan and Lee Kar Seng & son's boat.

These boats are well maintained everyday even they were just placed there for people's viewing only.

Pick a guess who own this?

Time for lunchie fix so we headed back to Tsim Tsa Tsui, Kowloon for some yummy Teo Chew lunch!

Forgotten the restaurant name but dishes was not bad tho.

Corn soup with beaten egg whites. I realized that Hongkies love to cook corn soup and corn congee.

Mixed vegetables with bean sprout. Still, Ipoh's bean sprout -> the unbeatable (fat and juicy)! HK bean sprout-> skinny & juiceless!

Steamed minced pork cake

Vegetarian version of Barbecued Pork and Roast Goose

No idea what is the name of this fish but thumbs up!

Burrrp!

Dogs also have their own pee-poo junction yo!

That's all for the half day tour, stay tune for the up coming post!

Sneak Peek:
Hi, my name is OBAMA (white version). I might look huge in size but I'm friendly you know.

With Love,
Elaine
